This course consists of design, sewing and pattern making subjects giving students the skills to create garments of their own design. Students who successfully complete the Certificate II will receive direct credit for a number of the units, against units within the Diploma of Applied Fashion Design & Technology if they choose to continue their study.

Students who undertake the Certificate II in Applied Fashion Design & Technology course will learn to develop their creative ideas in a caring, nurturing and supportive environment to bring out the best in every individual.

They will learn professional sewing and garment construction methods from industry professionals with many years experience in the fashion industry. Students will create a resource book of sewing sample techniques for future reference, and make completed basic garments to their own designs

Design fundamentals is another topic covered and how they relate specifically to the fashion industry, and students will develop the skills and knowledge to create wearable garments that will be developed from initial concept through to pattern making and final garment production.

Essential computer skills for working in any area of the fashion industry are also covered in this course, with students creating professional looking word and spreadsheet documents used for communicating essential information across different sectors within the industry.

As this qualification is from the latest updated nationally recognised training package students can be assured that they are receiving the most recent industry relevant training with results that are recognised Australia wide.

VET In Schools:

This course is suitable for high school students to complete as part of the 'VET in Schools' program. The course has been structured so that the finish date is in accordance with the VET reporting dates to the Qld Studies Authority to allow students in Year 12 to have this course contribute to their high school certificate.

Students who are going in to year 10, 11 or 12 and are interested in completing this course, should contact us to receive the course enrolment pack. We recommend that they then visit their school careers counsellor or VET coordinator to discuss their interest in undertaking the course with them, prior to enrolling.

As this is a certificate II program, successful completion of this course will enable students to obtain 4 points towards their high school certificate.

Course Duration:

The course runs on Fridays for 33 weeks, 9am - 3:30pm

  • Fabrics & Haberdashery for garments made during the course.*
  • Printing & photocoping by student.
  • Basic stationary: i.e. display folders, notepad, pens, pencil, rubber
  • List of required student resources supplied at enrolment

Required Course Equipment:

A detailed equipment list is provided on course application and is also available by request by contacting administration.

Students will need to provide the following equipment:

  • Sewing Equipment (approx: $50)
  • Pattern Making Equipment (approx: $80)
  • Art Equipment (approx: $80)
  • A Laptop Computer is required for this course - see detailed requirements below
  • USB Thumb Drive (2GB recommended minimum)
  • A sewing machine for home use (highly recommended)

* Costs cannot reasonably be estimated as this will vary depending on the student's choices for their designs, although students are able to purchase fabrics from us at discounted prices.

LAPTOP / NOTEBOOK MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Students accepted into the program will be required to have a laptop computer for the second year of study with a wireless network connection. The following minimum specifications are required:

  • Wireless 802.11a/b/g/n
  • Minimum 4Gb RAM
  • 2.5Ghz or faster processor
  • Web Browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox or Safari) (free online)
  • Anti-Virus Software.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader (free online)
  • Microsoft Office 2007 or higher (Students require Word, Excel and Powerpoint).

Course Fees

Upon enrolling in the course, the student (and guarantor/s) becomes liable to the institute for the full course fees.

  • Non-Refundable Enrolment Fee: $250.00
  • Balance paid in weekly direct debit instalments (with Ezypay) over course duration: $2,750.00
