This course consists of design, sewing and pattern making subjects giving students the skills to create garments of their own design. Students who successfully complete the Certificate II will receive direct credit for a number of the units, against units within the Diploma of Applied Fashion Design & Technology if they choose to continue their study.
Students who undertake the Certificate II in Applied Fashion Design & Technology course will learn to develop their creative ideas in a caring, nurturing and supportive environment to bring out the best in every individual.
They will learn professional sewing and garment construction methods from real industry professionals with many years experience in the fashion industry. Your garments will never look home made or amateur again. Students will not only create a resource book of sewing sample techniques for future reference, but will also make completed garments to their own designs as well.
Design fundamentals is another topic covered and how they relate specifically to the fashion industry, and students will develop the skills and knowledge to create wearable yet innovative garments that will be developed from initial concept through to pattern making and final garment production.
Textile knowledge is one of the most important skills that any designer can have as it is the fundamental building block of any good fashion design. Students will benefit from the many years of industry experience that all of their teachers have, and students will have the opportunity to learn this theory subject using innovative blended learning techniques specifically developed for the Australian Institute of Fashion Design by a leading textile artist and educational resource designer.
Essential computer skills for working in any area of the fashion industry are also covered in this course, with students creating professional looking word and spreadsheet documents used for communicating essential information across different sectors within the industry, such as:
- garment costing sheets
- design specification sheets
- invoices
As this qualification is from the latest updated nationally recognised training package students can be assured that they are receiving the most recent industry relevant training with results that are recognised Australia wide.

VET In Schools:
This course is suitable for high school students to complete as part of the 'VET in Schools' program. The course has been structured so that the finish date is in accordance with the VET reporting dates to the Qld Studies Authority to allow students in Year 12 to have this course contribute to their high school certificate.
Students who are going in to year 10, 11 or 12 and are interested in completing this course, should contact us to receive the course enrolment pack. We recommend that they then visit their school careers councilor or VET coordinator to discuss their interest in undertaking the course with them, prior to enrolling.
As this is a certificate II program, successful completion of this course will enable students to obtain 4 points towards their high school certificate.
Course Duration:
The course is to be completed over one day a week for a year on Fridays from 9am – 4pm. Starting in March 2010. There are two, intensives during the year in the July and September school holidays.

Course fees include:
- tuition
- class notes
- pattern making paper for in-class activities
- use of the school’s equipment
- school t-shirt.
Price:
The course fees are for a position in the course and are payable whether the student completes the course or not. Upon enrolling in the course, the student (and guarantor/s) becomes liable to the institute for the full course fees.
To secure a position in the course, student's must pay a minimum non-refundable course deposit of 10% of the 'Discounted Upfront Payment Price' (listed below).
