fashion designNext Intake Starts: 15th Feb 2010 - 2 Positions have just become available!

Next Intake Starts: 8th March 2010 - Only 1 Position left.

The AIFD Advanced Diploma & Diploma of Applied Fashion Design & Technology course offers students intensive training in fashion design processes including advanced design and product development, pattern making, couture garment construction and computer aided design to give students the skills to work in their chosen area of the fashion industry.

The course is taught by trainers who have had vast experience (the majority with over 20 years experience) working within the fashion industry and most of whom still currently work within the industry. This gives our students the ability to gain valuable insights from trainers with real industry experience and benefit from their experiences, knowledge and industry contacts.

fashion paradeDuring the course students will have the opportunity to enter into various fashion design competitions and show their work at various fashion parades and events. By participating in these competitions and events students will challenge their creative potential and receive invaluable experience.

Students also have the opportunity of visiting industry only events such as Australian Fashion Week and Fashion Exposed during the course of their study. Students may participate in work placement during their study with us, which again offers students more valuable experience in the fashion industry.

Students who successfully complete the Diploma in Applied Fashion Design & Technology course may then continue on to the Advanced Diploma of Applied Fashion Design & Technology course, which takes a further 6 months to complete and is designed to give students valuable business and management skills.

Why the Advanced Diploma?

In the Advanced Diploma, students work on developing, designing and presenting a range of clothing, from concept to final production in order to learn the business skills of management, marketing and promoting fashion labels, and scoping production options, both domestic and offshore.

On the competition of the Advanced Diploma, students will be in a better position to obtain work within the fashion industry as they will have experienced the process of designing and developing a fashion range, through to the marketing and production stage and will have a range of designs to show prospective employers their talent and skills. Student’s with the view to launching their own label, will be able to start selling and taking orders for their first wholesale range.

After completing the Advanced Diploma, students have the option to participate in an overseas internship either in Italy, Spain, the UK or China.

What is the difference between the Applied Fashion Design & Technology course and the Fashion & Textiles Merchandising Course?

The Applied Fashion Design & Technology course teaches students to design and produce their own garments - learning sewing and patternmaking skills, whereas the Diploma of Fashion & Textiles Merchandising course teaches students design, marketing, merchandising and business skills. Students in the Fashion & Textiles Merchandising course do no learn how to sew or make patterns.

It is possible to do both courses (over two years) for those students who would like to learn how to produce their own fashion designs as well as learn the business skills for running their own fashion label.
