The fashion industry is exciting, challenging and rewarding. Designing clothes is more than either having great ideas or drawing gorgeous dresses. Opportunities lie in the fashion industry in many areas other than just design. At AIFD we teach you not just how to design and create your fashion designs, but also every step of the process from creation to marketing to sales and so on, so that you will have the skills and abilities to work within many areas of the fashion industry.
The Australian Institute of Fashion Design (AIFD) is part of the Australian Institute of Creative Design (AICD) and offers a range of courses in various areas of the fashion industry students in classroom learning swimwear construction techniquesincluding: fashion design, fashion illustration, drawing, fashion design and portfolio development, computer aided fashion design (CAD), fashion merchandising and marketing, fashion retailing, pattern making, sewing, garment construction and fashion styling.

In response to a demand for practically based, industry relevant training, AIFD offers a number of comprehensive fashion training programmes that will equip you for a new career in the fashion industry, including the Advanced Diploma of Applied Fashion Design & Technology (on offer full time) and the Advanced Diploma of Fashion & Textiles Merchandising.

The AIFD fashion school uses industry standard equipment and CAD software in our training programmes. Our teaching staff are passionate, qualified professionals with many years of experience working within the fashion industry, passing on their first hand knowledge and experience to students and ensuring you achieve results that will more than justify your investment into your future career.

The fashion industry consists of many more career opportunities than just fashion design, pattern-making and garment construction. Numerous roles exist in the business side of the industry in areas such as fashion marketing and PR, merchandising, production management, sales, buying, trend forecasting and many more. To be successful in the fashion industry, students must develop a sense of what the consumers want, what works, what sells and how to effectively market it.

This course consists of design, sewing and pattern making subjects giving students the skills to create garments of their own design. Students who successfully complete the Certificate II will receive direct credit for a number of the units, against units within the Diploma of Applied Fashion Design & Technology if they choose to continue their study.

The AIFD Fast Track Fashion course is a short course designed to provide you with the basics you need to get out into the fashion industry as soon as possible. The Fast Track Fashion course is great for students who are looking at starting their own fashion label or interested in a career as a fashion designer.

Learn how to create professionally finished garments for yourself. AIFD's beginner sewing classes are designed to teach student's the tricks of the trade to creating beautifully finished garments for themselves. Students will start off making a straight skirt in calico and then will make the skirt again in a good quality fabric to reinforce the skills learnt. This makes sure we cover some important basic techniques such as darts, lining and invisible zips. We have sample skirts for students to try on to determine correct sizing. Students work at their own pace and the teacher attends to each student along each step of the way.

AICD's pattern making short course has been designed to give students the skills to create patterns to a range of different styles to their own body measurements/fit. Students will learn how to create a 'block pattern' to their own measurements from a standard block size pattern. If you are sick of using commercial sewing patterns and want to be able to make your own designs to fit you, then this course will teach you the basics of how to create your own patterns so you won't have to go hunting through the commercial pattern books again trying to find something that resembles the style you are after!

Learn to create professional fashion illustrations and specification drawings using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Students will learn the skills to create fashion illustrations, design presentations, technical drawings, swing tags, and business cards, giving students the skills to work within the fashion industry.

Learn how to use industrial sewing equipment used for swimwear production. Also learn how you can make your own swimwear to fit you at home, using a domestic sewing machines and overlockers. Learn specialty stretch stitches, elastic application and more, to create a professionally finished swimsuit.

This is a great follow-on course for those that have completed the 'Fast Track Fashion Design Course' or the Beginner Sewing Lessons. This is an excellent course if you are looking to start your own fashion label and would like to get some of your design's off the ground, while learning essential pattern making skills at the same time!

This 3 day intensive shoe design course will allow you to explore your creativity and teach you how to draw your design ideas successfully. You will learn how to develop design concepts to create your own shoe collection for your target market, how to find suppliers and manufacturers to have your range produced and how to promote and market your shoe label. Learn the parts of a shoe and correct terminology so that you can communicate with factories off shore.

Never sewn before? Get started with our one week basic sewing course. Students will make a skirt learning techniques such as grain line, inserting invisible zippers, lining, darts and overlocking. After completing the first garment, students will learn important sewing techniques including a variety of different seam finishes and a fly front zip.

Over one week learn basic pattern making techniques for skirts, tops, shirts and dresses. Learn how to adjust a block pattern to you own measurements. Pattern make various skirt styles - A-Line, Panel Line, Gore, Yoke, High Waisted, Circular and Pleated. Pattern make various dress/top styles - empire line, princess line, gathered, t-shirt. Shirt's, collars, sleeves. Take a pattern from a basic garment.

Get an introduction to the fashion industry and what is involved in a career as a fashion designer. In this two day course you will learn about the various career options available in the fashion industry, gain an understanding of what is involved in getting a design from an idea in your head to a made up garment and then sold in stores. Gain a basic understanding of fabrics and important design considerations when designing a collection for sale.

Learn how to draw and stylise the fashion figure and how to draw important garment details such as draping, ruffles, collars, sleaves and more so that your designs look real. Through shading you will start to make your illustrations look 3 dimensional to bring your designs to life.
